How long does it take to write and publish a book?
By Yvette Farkas · October 2026
Many writers can take a book from idea to published in three to six months with a steady routine. The writing takes the longest, and small daily sessions add up faster than most writers expect.
The writing
Do the math for your own book. A 25,000-word book written at 500 words a day takes 50 writing days. At five days a week, that is ten weeks. A longer book takes longer; a shorter one, less.
The editing
Leave a week between finishing the draft and starting your edit, so you read it with fresh eyes. Then plan for two to four weeks of your own revisions, plus the time your editor needs.
The publishing
Cover design, formatting and setting up your listings usually take two to four weeks. Order a printed proof and allow time for it to arrive.
The launch
Give yourself a month to tell readers the book is coming, gather early reviews and plan launch week.
What slows writers down
Waiting to feel ready, researching instead of writing, and rewriting chapter one again and again. A plan with a weekly goal keeps you moving.
The From Manuscript to Market course follows a 90-day framework from blank page to published, plus a bonus month for your launch.
